Deadline Approaches
The government deadline for the United Auto Workers to reach a deal with Chrysler is 10 days away. Chrysler also has to complete an alliance deal with Italian automaker Fiat by April 30 to get more government aid. Without further help, Chrysler likely would be auctioned off in pieces under bankruptcy court supervision. The Canadian Auto Workers union plans to resume negotiations with Chrysler. The Canadian government has said it will cut off support for Chrysler without a deal by April 30. Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has said the Italian automaker will walk away from the proposed tie-up unless Chrysler's unions agree to major cost cuts.
