Officer Suspended
A Kalamazoo Police Officer accused of injuring a teenage suspect has been suspended. Public Safety Officer Derek Nugent will lose ten days pay and then be reassigned. Investigators say Nugent slammed a 16-year old suspect against a wall at the police station last month, knocking out three of the boy's teeth. Nugent said the teen hit his head while resisting. The incident was caught on a surveillance camera. Acting Public Safety Chief Jim Mallery said the video was troubling. He has apologized to the teen and his family. The family has filed a complaint against the department and may file a lawsuit.
