Deposit Laws
There’s a new plan to cut into the millions of dollars smugglers are making on Michigan bottle deposits. People from other states bring bottles and cans into Michigan by the truckload and cash in on the 10-cent deposit. New legislation would permit stores to upgrade their machines so that they only accept containers sold in Michigan. It would also allow stores to limit the number of containers that can be redeemed in one day and increase penalties for smugglers. The bills are being considered in the state Senate.
